As you may have learned over the last year and a half, Jake lost a close friend, 8 year old Kylekyleandjake Roger, to a brain tumor in early 2009. Since Kyle’s passing his mother, Christin, started the Seattle “Run of Hope”, a charitable race formed in his honor to assist in the funding of pediatric brain tumor research. Last year’s event raised over $250,000 after monumental support from the Seattle community, and because of the great success it will be held every year.

This year’s charitable 5k run/3k walk will be on Sunday, October 3rd in Seattle, and the hope is to achieve another great year of participation and contributions to such an important endeavor. In that spirit, Jake shot some promos for KOMO–Coach Sark’s website has some photos from the taping of his appearance.

If you wish to find out ways to help without being a part of the race, please visit Kyle Roger’s team page. And, if you wanted to learn more about Kyle’s story, you can find it here.

Thanks to everyone who helped make 2009’s event such a great success, and we look forward to seeing you in October!

‘Tis the season for preseason award watch lists, and Jake has made two of the most prestigious listsjake-oregon3 for quarterbacks. Jake has been named as a possible future recipient for the Johnny Unitas “Golden Arm Award“, an honor given to the nation’s best quarterback. In order to be considered for the trophy the player must not only have a great year on the field but must also ‘demonstrate good citizenship off the field and maintain the ideals of good character, morals, and values that Johnny Unitas upheld in his lifetime and career.’

And, recently released, the Davey O’Brien Foundation announced that Jake has also made their watch list for the 2010 season, the second consecutive season he has been named to the list. The Davey O’Brien award goes to the quarterback who displays the best balance of on and off the field performance.

Both award winners will be announced shortly after the completion of the 2010 regular college football season.

Jake Planning on a 1-Sport Summer

In an interview yesterday with 710 ESPN, Jake announced that he plans on saving this summer exclusively for football related activities, silencing some speculation that he may fulfill some baseball obligations with the Angels organization prior to the 2010 football season.

“I’m going to concentrate on getting ready for this coming football season” Jake told Paul Silvi and Jim Moorelocker-usc3 yesterday. “It’s a big summer for us as far as making sure that we’re here spending time with each other, getting cohesion between me and the receivers and the running backs and the line, able to work with everybody as a unit and getting comfortable with each other. So I think it’s an important summer for us. I’ll be here spending time with those guys.”

Jake signed a 6-year rights contract with the MLB’s Anaheim/LA Angels franchise last year after being drafted in the 10th round, yet was open and honest that football was his first priority. Nevertheless, the Angels wanted an athlete of his caliber and were willing to take the risk of him not playing baseball in the next 6 years. And, for Jake it is a great back up plan in case his football pursuits do not materialize after college–however unlikely that is.

Obviously, this announcement is music to the ears of Husky Football fans. If you want to hear the full interview, you can catch the full audio here. Also, you can read some more thoughts on the matter here.

The Spring Game is here, a ‘Friday Night Lights’ event that will start at 6:30 at Husky Stadium. Don’t miss Jake’s last Spring Game in a Husky uniform! And, from the sounds of things, the event will have a lot of activities. jake-heisman-postcard

On Monday, Stewart Mandel of Sports Illustrated has an in-depth feature about Jake’s decision to return to Washington for his Senior year, as well as how it may translate into team success in 2010 and his draft position in 2011.

Also on Monday, the University sent out a ton of postcards to potential Heisman voters to get them thinking about Jake in the 2010 race. Ironically though, there is no mention of “Heisman” on the postcard.

Ted Miller, Blogger for ESPN.com, posted an interview with Jake last Friday. He then wrote a story a few days ago that talks about Jake’s 2011 draft stock.

Bob Condotta also posted a story for Seattle Times.com that details Jake’s decision to stay in school might have been the best choice after all. Last Friday also marked a new video release of Jake Highlights, created by the University’s Athletic Department. And, to start the busy day, Jake appeared on the ‘First Take’ show on ESPN2 via phone.

And in case you missed it, the NY Times kicked off the coverage with a great feature on Jake.

After Sam Bradford of Oklahoma was taken #1 overall in yesterday’s first round of the NFL draft, those who questioned Jake’s return for his senior year because of injury risk were quieted. And, as the rest of the draft played out, it continued to act as a validation that injury risk is somewhat of a misleading reason to leave early for the NFL.

“It’s a good lesson for everybody that you can come back and play your senior year and still fulfill your NFL dreams and aspirations at that level,” Locker said of the Bradford selection. “… It’s a good message for everybody in college football.”

You can find a couple of articles that elaborate on the first round of the NFL draft and it’s impact to Locker’s decision in the Herald Net and also the Seattle Times.

Jake also appeared on ESPN2’s “First Take” this morning at 8:30 a.m. The video may be on-line sometime today here.

Jake was highlighted today in the NY Times, a story that detailed his return to Washington for his senior season and gave many people across the country a glimpse of the talented quarterback.

In the story, Jake again reiterates his belief that the current experience of College Football is not one to take for granted.

“Don’t get me wrong,” Locker explained to the NY Times. “I really look forward to the N.F.L. But it’s not going anywhere. You can never go back and play college football.”

Ted Miller of ESPN.com has this piece on Jake’s priorities and goals before he moves to a career in the NFL. As part of the story, Jake talks about how he continues to improve on choosing when to run and when to throw.jake-locker-notre-dame4

“A lot of times when plays break down is when you get your biggest plays,” Jake said. “It’s about a good balance of both; of understanding when it’s going to be productive to get outside the pocket and try to make a play and when you need to stand in there and make a throw.”

Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times caps the weekend scrimmage news, a game highlighted by a first series Locker to Aguilar 29 yard TD catch.

Much has been made of Jake’s decision to return to Washington for his senior year, possibly sacrificing guaranteed millions of dollars and a possible #1 draft position in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Mel Kiper of ESPN says that the status for Jake hasn’t changed, and that he will be the top player chosen in the 2011 NFL Draft next April.

Until then, Husky fans will get to enjoy 13 more games with the future #1 draft pick at the helm.

Tuesday marked the start of the final spring practice before the final football season for Jake and everyone, including Locker himself, was glad to see him back on the field.

“I was really excited,” Jake said. “Just the atmosphere, the intensity and the overall enjoyment that you have when you’re out here is something that you miss when you’re not. It was great to get back out here with the guys and get yelled at and coached and play a little football.”

Jake passed up the opportunity to be the potential #1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft, and once he decided to come back for his Senior season he was widely considered as the the #1 recruiting catch in the nation. Coach Sarkisian knows how lucky he was to have the leader of his team back for one season, but also realizes the countdown has begun.

“Inevitably, a year from today, he’s going to be getting ready for the NFL draft, and all of the expectations, and the hype and the media then. So we might as well get him prepared for it,” Sarkisian said.

For Spring Ball coverage, Bob Condotta does a great job of keeping you up to speed on each practice. You can find his blog here.

And, Go Huskies has a nice story on Locker and how excited he is to be back with his teammates gearing up for a successful 2010 campaign.

Local writer Tim Booth also details Jake’s comfort on his decision to stay in this story .
